Gatsby-esque suits and dolce vita tailoring: here’s what Milan thinks men should wear for summer

Gatsby-esque suits and dolce vita tailoring: here’s what Milan thinks men should wear for summer

Shorts at Gucci that are short enough to make a matron blush, crop tops at Prada that no man over 23 would dare to wear and sparkles aplenty at Louis Vuitton. Men’s fashion’s current focus is Gen Z, and who could blame the conglomerates for trying?

Mads Mikkelsen and other models on the runway

Times are tough and it’s standard corporate practice to snare them young and lock them in for life – a phone case at first, levelling up to trainers in time – but across the men’s Spring-Summer 2025 shows, there hasn’t been a great deal for the grown-up male consumer for whom Taylor Swift sounds like a breed of bird rather than the biggest sensation sweeping the world right now.

Thankfully Alessandro Sartori at Zegna takes the long view approach to men’s dressing. The 57-year-old designer isn’t about the flash and frippery of the new, but a more gradual tectonic shift towards a more considered way of dressing for men.

Models on the catwalk   0

This season, his designs were a fresh, light antidote to the searing 29 degree heat in Milan, with a focus on long term excellence of fabrication over a hit bag. His choice of models was also notable – characterful men of a certain vintage with sweeps of grey hair alongside the more youthful types who normally walk catwalks. Oh, and choosing 58-year-old actor Mads Mikkelsen to grace the catwalk looking effortlessly cool, was the perfect triumph of men of substance over kids creating a social media frenzy.

Jamaal Bowman’s primary defeat leaves progressives angry at role of Aipac

Jamaal Bowman’s primary defeat leaves progressives angry at role of Aipac

Progressive groups are calling on House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries to reject the endorsement and donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac) in the wake of congressman Jamaal Bowman‘s primary loss in New York.

The United Democracy Project, a super Pac affiliated with Aipac, dumped nearly $15m into Bowman’s district as part of its successful effort to elevate George Latimer to the Democratic nomination.

A coalition of progressive groups, outraged over Aipac’s involvement in the race, sent a letter to Jeffries today demanding that he reconsider his association with the group and denounce its tactics.

“AIPAC turned the NY16 race into the most expensive Democratic primary in history, waging an
unacceptable assault on our democracy, our communities, and our shared future. We call on you to take action to address this threat,” the letter reads.

AIPAC’s interference in Democratic politics poses a grave danger to the vision our organizations fight for every day: a future in which everyone can access a high quality education, comprehensive healthcare, a liveable climate, affordable housing, good jobs for good pay, humane immigration policies, human rights centered foreign policy — and more.

Latimer defeated Bowman by 17 points yesterday, and he is now heavily favored to win the seat in November, as the Cook Political Report rates the district as solid Democrat.

Human rights group urges UK financial regulator to block Shein’s LSE flotation

Human rights group urges UK financial regulator to block Shein’s LSE flotation

A human rights group has urged Britain’s financial regulator to block the Chinese fast-fashion retailer Shein’s planned blockbuster flotation on the London Stock Exchange.

Stop Uyghur Genocide, a UK-based human rights charity that alleges minority Uyghur people are being used as forced labour at some of Shein’s cotton suppliers in China’s north-western Xinjiang region, has begun a legal campaign against the planned stock market listing.

Represented by the law firm Leigh Day, the campaign group has written to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to argue that “any attempt by Shein to list on the LSE should be refused”.

The China-founded company, which was valued at $66bn (£52bn) in a fundraising round last year, began to explore a listing on the LSE early this year, and is expected to file a prospectus with the UK regulator soon. Shein abandoned its original plan to list in New York after opposition from US politicians.

On Tuesday, Amnesty International UK said Shein’s potential London listing would be a “badge of shame” for the London market because of the fast-fashion firm’s “questionable” labour and human rights standards.

The fast-fashion retailer said on Wednesday: “Shein has a zero-tolerance policy for forced labour and we are committed to respecting human rights. We take visibility across our entire supply chain seriously and we require our contract manufacturers to only source cotton from approved regions.”

Kenyan president scraps bill to raise taxes after violent protests leave 23 dead

William Ruto says he has listened to the people of Kenya, who gathered across the country to oppose the law

The Kenyan president, William Ruto, has withdrawn a bill to raise taxes a day after violent protests erupted around the country following its approval by parliament.

Ruto’s surprise decision not to sign the finance bill came after violent clashes between police and protesters at the Kenyan assembly and across the country left at least 23 people dead and scores wounded, according to medics.

“Listening keenly to the people of Kenya, who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this finance bill 2024, I concede. And therefore, I will not sign the 2024 finance bill, and it shall subsequently be withdrawn,” he said in a press briefing in Nairobi.

The climbdown will be seen as a major setback for Ruto, who came to power vowing to help Kenyans cope with rising costs but has seen much of the country, led by youth, unite in opposition to his latest attempt at reforms.

In an attempt to further defuse the volatile situation, Ruto proposed a dialogue with young people, civil society, religious organisations and professional bodies on the bill.

He also directed austerity measures to reduce expenditure in his office, the executive, parliament, as well as in the judiciary and county governments “to ensure that we do live within our means, respecting the very loud message that is coming from the people of Kenya”.

The move will be considered a victory for the week-old protest movement that grew from online condemnations of tax increases into mass rallies demanding a political overhaul, in the most serious crisis of Ruto’s two-year-old presidency.
